Reptiles of the World Photo Shoot Report for 2002 - English
URL: http://www.hoothollow.com/ReptilesOfTheWorld2001Report.html

For the last several years, we've been doing one of the most unique photo shoots offered anywhere in the country, our reptile shoot. For years, we called the shoot our 'Venomous Reptiles of the World Photo Shoot,' but we've amended that now, to reflect the huge variety of creatures we've brought in for filming. This year we had over 100 species of reptile, amphibian, and tarantula available for our shoot. Each group generally shot between 30 and 60 of these creatures, with those folks who did back-to-back shoots doing 50 or more different species.

Frog and Toad—In the Desert - English
URL: http://www.naturewriting.com/frogand.htm

Our small group of Desert Survivors, led by Craig Deutsche, climbed into the Panamint Mountains bordering Death Valley National Park through Surprise Canyon. A stream cascaded through the canyon, and we stepped in and out of the water as we pulled ourselves over rocks heading higher into the mountains. It was a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. A canyon wren’s trill welcomed us, stream orchids (Epipactis gigantea) bloomed beside us, hedgehog cacti thrust their purple blooms from the canyon walls, willows arched overhead, and at our feet—frogs and toads.

Amphibians: A Conservation Moment - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/conservationmoment.html

shown in filters: Publications

Amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts) are wonderful animals -- you can sit back and enjoy listening to their varied calls. In many places you can hear a symphony of frog voices around a pond during a warm spring evening. Because of their relatively harmless nature, they make exciting educational tools for children.

Tail, Limb and Skin Autotomy - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/autotomy.html

Autotomy (auto = self, tomos = cut) is the self-induced releasing of a specific body part. In certain lizards, it is the tail that autotomizes; in plethodontid salamanders (terrestrial salamanders lacking gills and lungs in the adult form), it is their tails, digits, and portions of their limbs. Lizards do not autotomize their digits or limbs. If your lizard's toes have are falling off, this is a serious medical problem that requires veterinary attention now. In a few lizards, it is pieces of skin that autotomize, a defense strategy known as "fragile skin."

Amphibian Pain and Analgesia - English
URL: http://www.anapsid.org/amphibpain.html

shown in filters: Publications

Analgesics are often not provided to amphibians because the presence and severity of pain may not be recognized in these animals. In addition, there is little information on the mechanism of action of analgesic agents in amphibians. However, amphibians possess appropriate neurologic components for transmitting pain from peripheral receptors to the central nervous system and antinociceptive mechanisms to modulate pain. They are capable of displaying behavioral and physiologic modification of pain systems in response to analgesic pharmacologic agents.
