rachiopods are marine animals that, upon first glance, look like clams. They are actually quite different from clams in their anatomy, and they are not closely related to the molluscs. They are lophophorates, and so are related to the Bryozoa and Phoronida.

Les brachiopodes forment un groupe zoologique comprenant des animaux marins, jamais coloniaux et présentant deux valves comme les Lamellibranches, mais à la différence de ces derniers, la symétrie des valves se fait par rapport à un plan perpendiculaire au plan d'ouverture. Leur organisation interne est également différente de celle des Lamellibranches et se rapproche plutôt de celle des Bryozoaires.
