The Shingon (Tantric) tradition of Mahayana Buddhism arose in India in approximately the 6th century AD, although its roots go back many hundreds of years before that. It, too, adopted the position that none of the Hinayana (and now none of the Mahayana) was to be rejected.

Both Shingon (Chinese: Chen-yen) and Tendai (Chinese: T'ien-T'ai) Buddhism have Chinese antecedents (see CHINESE BUDDHISM). Their basic doctrines were developed in China and imported directly into Japan. Both emphasise the possibility of 'attaining enlightenment in this very body' (soku-shin-jo-butsu) through esoteric (Sanskrit: Tantra, Vajrayana) techniques including visualisation meditation, chanting of mantras and ritual gestures.

Major Japanese school of esoteric Buddhism, and the most important esoteric school outside India and Tibet. Shingon arose in Japan's Heian period (794-1185) when the great monk Kukai went to China from 804 to 806 to study esoteric Buddhism. He developed his own synthesis of esoteric practice and doctrine, centred on the cosmic Buddha Vairocana.
