Quakerism traces its roots back to the mid 17th century. In a contextual sense, it broadly emerged from the Seeker movement, though its commonly held beliefs and organisation distinguished it from progenitor. Quakerism spread rapidly through the north of England and the American colonies and though they experienced considerable discrimination during this period Quakers were able to carve out a place for themselves in their communities.

The peculiar manners, tenets, or worship of the Quakers (aka the Society of Friends), a religious sect noted for its pacifism. The term "quaker" was used as a nickname, either referring to the way adherents trembled under the influence of a charismatic speaker, or in derision of founder George Fox (1624-1691) who had admonished people to "quake at the word of the Lord." The name is no longer considered derogatory.

Barclay's Apology - English

Barclay's Apology for the True Christian Divinity, which presents and develops these theses, was published in 1675 during the first half-century of the Quaker movement. As an apologia, it seeks to offer a rational and theological justification of early Quaker belief and practice. How well it succeeds at that is, of course, open to debate; my own opinion is that Barclay did remarkably well given the unorthodox, antinomian, and sometimes "unscriptural" nature of the movement he sought to defend in terms that the ordinary Christian, of whatever form of orthodoxy, could understand.

Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) - English

The Religious Society of Friends is near the opposite end of the religious spectrum. They rely heavily upon spiritual searching by individual members, individual congregations and meetings (regional assemblies). This makes the Quakers difficult to describe in a short essay. We attempt here to portray mainstream Quaker practice. Some Quaker meetings at the liberal and evangelical ends of the spectrum differ significantly from what is covered below.
