Skinks (Scincidae)

This family is limited to Skinks, which occur on all continents in temperate and tropical climates. The family is characterized by smooth, shiny scales that cover the body, and tails that break off easily. Skinks use their tail-breaking ability as a mechanism for escape from predators. There are two genera and six species in Georgia.

Scincidae - English
URL: http://www.embl-heidelberg.de/~uetz/families/Scincidae.html

The family Scincidae is the most species-rich lizard family with about 1200 species. Many species-rich genera (e.g. Sphenomorphus, Mabuya) are still studied insufficiently and their systematics is controversial.

Gli Scincidi, Scincidae - Italian
URL: http://www.ittiofauna.org/webmuseum/rettili/scincidae.htm
