Dutch scholar and leading humanist of the Renaissance era, who taught and studied all over Europe and was a prolific writer. His pioneer translation of the Greek New Testament (with parallel Latin text, 1516) exposed the Vulgate as a second-hand document. Although opposed to dogmatism and abuse of church power, he remained impartial during Martin Luther's conflict with the pope.
Erasmus, Desiderius. The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition. 2002 - English URL: http://www.bartleby.com/59/9/erasmusdesid.html
A Dutch scholar of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, who attempted to solve some of the controversies of the time of the Reformation. Erasmus urged changes in the general views of Christians, including more personal piety, reforms that would make the Roman Catholic Church less worldly, and the study of the literature of ancient Greece and Rome. Erasmus’s most famous work is a satire entitled The Praise of Folly.

Erasmus, Desiderius - Dutch URL: http://www.kun.nl/ahc/vg/html/vg000194.htm
