Once a prominent landmark, Long Lake played host to Plains Indians and early European settlers who camped and hunted waterfowl and other game along its shores. Long Lake NWR is one in a series of refuges located in the Central Flyway, the great waterfowl migration corridor extending from Canada to Mexico.
