The Observatory of the Catalan language is an initiative of a whole series of civic and cultural entities. Their aim is to create an independent body that Catalan society can trust because of its high reliability and academic rigor. The Observatory's mission is to assess the Catalan language in terms of how society uses it and how its legal framework develops.

По своей структуре занимает промежуточное положение между иберороманской и галло-романской подгруппой. На каталанском языке говорят в автономной области Каталония (Испания), в области Руссильон (Франция, департамент Восточные Пиренеи), в государстве Андорра, в г.Альгеро (Сардиния) и на Балеарских о-вах – всего ок. 8 млн. человек. Литературный каталанский язык сформировался на основе восточного диалекта (г.Барселона); западный диалект (г.Валенсия) испытал сильное влияние испанского (кастильского) языка.

Всего семь лет, с 1932 по 1939 год, просуществовала Республика Каталония. Потом, после победы в Гражданской войне националистов, в Испании начались годы диктатуры, одной из жертв которой пал каталанский язык. Лишь после смерти генерала Франко была провозглашена в 1977 году частичная, а в 1979 - полная автономия Каталонии, со столицей в Барселоне. Но на всем долгом пути каталанский язык оставался рупором национального самоопределения.
