The Duck-billed Platypus - English

The platypus is the only member of its family. Other members of the Order Monotrema are the Echidnas. The name Monotrema comes from the fact that Echidnas and the platypus use the same opening for reproduction and elimination of waste products; an attribute of reptiles.

The single living genus and species, Ornithorhynchus anatinus, inhabits freshwater streams, lakes, and lagoons of eastern Australia, in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania (Griffiths 1978).

Monotremes - duck-billed platypus and echidnas or spiny anteaters first appeared in the Pleistocene Period. They are currently found in Australia and New Guinea and reproduce by by shelled eggs, incubated by female. There is no organized nipple as the milk flows from mammary ducts onto the fur of the abdomen. The adults are toothless and the rostrum is covered with horny beak.
