Slender waders with long, very fine, straight bills (stilts) or upturned bills (avocets), and extremely long thin legs, feet partly or fully webbed. Foraging in shallow waters, fresh and salt, they wade, probe, sweep bill from side to side, pick from surface while swimming, or upend. In Australia they are not regular, long distance migrants although there is a seasonal regularity about their opportunistic movements.
