The systematic affinities of the Ctenodactylidae are uncertain, and the family perhaps should be placed within the suborder Sciuromorpha rather than the Hystricomorpha. The earliest fossils assigned to the family date from the middle Eocene of Asia. There are also Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene remains from Asia; Miocene and Pleistocene remains from Sardinia and Sicily; and Miocene and Pleistocene remains from North Africa.
