Spinner, Spotted, and Striped Dolphins
- English
URL: http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/walkers_mammals_of_the_world/cetacea/cetacea.delp
These dolphins can swim at speeds of 22-28 km/hr. They often seem to frolic about ships and ride the bow waves. They sometimes jump clear of the water, and the spinner dolphins derive their name from their habit of leaping above the surface and turning two or more times on their longitudinal axis. [ eng ] |

Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris)
- English
URL: http://www.nsrl.ttu.edu/tmot1/stenlong.htm
Habits. Spinner dolphins derive their name from a habit of leaping from the water and warping their bodies into graceful curves, or spinning lengthwise before splashing back. The motives for this behavior are not known but such actions are often in themselves enough to distinguish this species.

Stenella attenuata (Spotted Dolphin): Narrative
- English
URL: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/accounts/stenella/s._attenuata$narrative.h
S. attenuata lives in the tropical and subtropical areas of the ocean and seas. Although some live inshore, most members of the species live offshore, where the temperature of the deeper water remains fairly constant. The majority of this species live in between the equator and the Galapagos Islands for the same reason that they tend to live offshore. The home range is hundreds of kilometers in diameter.
