While one may likely see birds flying within the CINMS boundaries, one may also see dolphins "flying" out of Sanctuary waters. The common dolphin (Delphinus delplu) is the most abundant cetacean species off the California coast, and may be seen traveling in pods of one thousand or more, swimming at speeds up to 25 miles per hour.

Common dolphins are fond of coastal waters, but are also found well out to sea. Generally, they prefer surface temperatures greater than 10 degrees Celsius. These dolphins normally travel at 5 to 7 miles per hour (although they are known to reach speeds of 29 miles per hour when pursuing food), and can move up to 150 to 200 miles in a 48 hour period.

These are highly social, deep water dolphins; groups contain 20 to several hundred members but huge concentrations numbering into the hundreds of thousands have been observed. Common Dolphin, or Saddleback Dolphin - English
URL: http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/walkers_mammals_of_the_world/cetacea.delphinidae.

Delphinus is among the most gregarious of mammals, often being seen in groups of 1,000 or more (Leatherwood and Reeves 1978). Schools of up to 300,000 individuals sometimes formed over concentrations of fish in the Black Sea (E. D. Mitchell 1975b). During the spring and summer the large schools may break up into groups of 50-200 animals, and the sexes may segregate between mating seasons
