Short-finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) - English

Short-finned pilot whales may congregate in large numbers offshore — schools of several hundred have been observed — but group size usually ranges from 10 to 60. They are seen inshore at infrequent intervals and occasionally become stranded by severe storms.

This species is a gregarious species and usually travel in a small group of 4 to 6 individuals. They are occassionally see in herds of 50 or more and, on some occasions, they will gather by the hundreds. They are not particularly friendly with ships and do not ride the bow waves of vessels. They have an inborn fear of the killer whale and will come into shallow water and beach themselves of other escape routes are not available.

Pilot whales sleep by day and feed by night. They normally swim at about 8 km/hr but can attain speeds of 40 km/hr (Banfield 1974; U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service 1978). A radio-tagged individual was tracked to a depth of 610 meters, and a captive was used in a U.S. Navy experiment to recover objects about 500 meters below the surface.

Cetacea - the world's whales, dolphins and porpoises all on one site. The Long-Finned Pilot Whale can be found in all cold temperate and subpolar waters of all oceans except the North Pacific. It is not thought that Long-Finned Pilot Whales migrate.
