Joseph Addison.

Poet and essayist. He was born in Wiltshire and lived in Lichfield from the age of eleven, in 1683, when his father became the Dean of Lichfield. He was educated at the local Grammar school before going to Charterhouse then Queen's and Magdalen Colleges, Oxford, where he studied classics. At Charterhouse he was to make a friend of Richard Steele, who was later to become the founder of The tatler.

In early eighteenth-century English coffeehouse culture, no patron was as distinguished a conversationalist or as delightful an essayist as the Oxford-educated Joseph Addison. Born on May 1, 1672, in Milston, Wiltshire, where his father was rector, Addison had a long career in English politics as a committed Whig and in which he held many offices, including Secretary of Ireland and Secretary of State. He died in London at the age of forty-seven.

Addison was born on May 1, 1672, in Milston, Wiltshire, and educated at the University of Oxford, where he distinguished himself as a classical scholar and later became a fellow. In 1699 he was granted a government pension, which he used to travel through Europe.
