Henry Morton Stanley, born John Rowland on January 29, 1841 at Denbigh,Wales was one of the most famous nineteenth -century British explorers. At the age of 18 he decided to leave Wales. As a cabin boy he sailed to New Orleans, Louisiana, which he reached in 1858. There he gained employment under an American merchant named Henry Stanley, whose name he adopted.

Anglo-American journalist and empire builder, b. Denbigh, Wales. Originally named John Rowlands, he took the name of his adoptive father in New Orleans, where Stanley went in 1857. After fighting on both sides in the American Civil War, he drifted into journalism. His coverage of Lord Napier's Abyssinian campaign in 1868 for the New York Herald won him journalistic fame, and the Herald commissioned him to go to Africa to find David Livingstone.

Born into poverty, John Rowlands left Wales and in 1858 arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he took the name Henry Stanley. He fought as a Confederate in the U.S. Civil War, was captured, then fought on the Union side. As a journalist, he was dispatched from New York to Asia Minor and to the American West, and then assigned to Africa to find the missing explorer David Livingstone.

David Livingstone was born in Blantyre, Scotland in 1813. After receiving a medical degree from the University of Glasgow he joined the London Missionary Society. Before long he was sent by the Society to Africa. His work was to convert Africans to Christianity.

American journalist and adventurer, who took New York Herald's mission ”to go and find Livingstone”. In his diary HOW I FOUND LIVINGSTONE (1872) Stanley presents his story with stoicism, without magnifying his epic adventure of hardships of the journey. He traveled 700 miles in 236 days before he found the ailing Scottish missionary-explorer David Livingstone on the island of Ujiji.
