En 1500, après le retour triomphal de Vasco de Gama, Cabral est chargé du commandement d'une flotte de 13 caravelles avec Bartolomeu Dias comme vice-amiral. Il suit les instructions de Vasco de Gama qui conseille de suivre une route au Sud-Ouest le plus loin possible (pour profiter des alizés) avant de se tourner plein Est pour franchir le cap Bonne Espérance et pénétrer dans l'océan indien (les vents d'ouest sont alors prédominants).

d. 1500, Portuguese navigator. He was the first European to round (1488) the Cape of Good Hope, which he called Cabo Tormentoso [cape of storms]. That voyage opened the road to India. Dias accompanied Cabral on the voyage that resulted in the discovery of Brazil, but he perished in heavy seas off the African coast. He is also called Bartholomew Diaz.

Ele "descobreu" o Brasil no 22 de abril 1500. Amerigo Vespuci (julho 1499) e Vicente Yâñez Pinzón (janeiro 1500) já desembarcaram na terra Brasileira mas conforme o tratado de Tordesillas (1494) a terra foi considerado Portugesa. A partir de 1530/1532 o Portugal começou de colonizar mais intenso o pais. O primeiro nome do pais era Terra da Santa Cruz, mas depois 1540 o nome mudou para Brasil (madeira Brasil - pernambuco).

A celebrated Portugese navigator, generally called the discoverer of Brazil, born probably around 1460; date of death uncertain. Very little is known concerning the life of Cabral. He was the third son of Fernao Cabral, Governor of Beira and Belmonte, and Isabel de Gouvea, and married Isabel de Castro, the daughter of the distinguished Fernando de Noronha.
