Jolliet and Marquette led the first French expedition down the Mississippi, in 1673. They reached the mouth of the Arkansas. Their expedition was was one of the first in the chain of events that would finally lead to French possession of Louisiana.

In 1668 he was sent as a missionary to the Ottawa, spent a winter at Sault Ste Marie, and in 1669 reached La Pointe mission on Chequamegon Bay.

Jacques Marquette, French Jesuit missionary and explorer, was born in Laon, France, on June 1, 1637. After years of preparatory study and teaching, he arrived in Quebec in 1666, studied Indian language and culture, and was sent in 1668 to Sault Ste. Marie, a mission among the Ottawa Indians, and to La Pointe de St. Esprit.
