Russian explorer, born in Revel, Russia, 30 December, 1787; died there, 15 February, 1846. His father was the celebrated dramatist. The son was educated at the Academy of St. Petersburg, and entered the Russian navy. In 1815 he commanded an expedition that was equipped and sent out at the expense of Count Rumiantzeff, chancellor of the empire, to explore the South sea and Bering strait, in search of a northeast passage to the Atlantic. After exploring the South sea islands they steered toward Kamtchatka, and discovered, on 20 April, an island to which they gave the name of their patron, Rumiantzeff.

J. von Krusenstern on his circumnavigation (1803-6) and himself commanded two voyages around the world (1815-18, 1823-26). He discovered some 400 islands in the South Seas, checked the location of others, and gathered new information on the Pacific coast of Siberia.

Russian navigator, second son of the foregoing, was born at Reval on the 3oth of December 1787. After being educated at the St Petersbulg school of cadets, he accompanied Krusenstern on his voyage of 1803—1806.
