La collection de cartes du département des livres rares et collections spéciales réunit plus de 6 000 cartes historiques datant de 1556 aux années 1940. Les principaux joyaux de cette collection sont les cartes portant sur la découverte et l'exploration de l'Amérique du Nord, les oeuvres de cartographes européens du XVIe siècle (Hondius, Ortelius et Speed) ainsi que les cartes du Canada et de Montréal datant des XIXe et XXe siècles.
