GIS/ research in mapping urban climate and energy effects - English

Within our Berlin environmental Atlas we have published different maps to describe the urban climate situation in our city. One of our very new efforts in the field of the global climate change discussion is to gather all relevant data of the various CO2-emission sources in the city so to support a very detailed CO2-cataster (on the level of the single built-up areas) in the city. This should be the beginning of a CO2- monitoring in Berlin. Who does know any other efforts in this field in metropolitean ares, which are just published or under construction. We are interested in a comparision of the data basis, methods etc.

Urban areas have particular climatic conditions with a higher temperature than exposed country-side, weak winds and an amount of sunshine that varies according to the degree of pollution, the urban density, the orientation of the streets and the shade provided by other buildings.

Urbanization has a dynamic relationship with the physical environment. While urban growth affects the physical environment (usually negatively), urban environmental changes also affects the quality of life in these areas. The latter lead to biochemical, epidemiological and psychological responses in the urban dwellers. The debate over the relative importance of social vs. physical environmental factors on these responses is not yet settled.

The current research is part of a long-term study related to the modelling of energy balances within cities. The basic building block is a city canyon (2 buildings and the space between them). The goal is to understand the ways in which cities modify climate and also ways in which city climates might be modified.
