Introduction to the Hymenoptera - English
URL: http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/uniramia/hymenoptera.html

Hymenopterans, the "membrane-winged" insects, include bees, ants, and a large number of other insect taxa collectively referred to as wasps. The Hymenoptera include famous examples of social insects, such as honeybees and true ants; these insects have developed regimented social systems in which members are divided into worker, drone, and queen castes. Such social hymenoptera may live together in nests or hives of many thousands of individuals, all descended form a single queen. Not all hymenoptera are social, however; many live a solitary life, coming together only for a brief mating.

List of hymenopteran genera present in the New Zealand Arthropod Collection - English
URL: http://www.landcare.cri.nz/science/nzac/?hymenoptera_genera

Valentine and Walker (1991: Annotated catalogue of New Zealand Hymenoptera) list 549 species of Hymenoptera in 293 genera recorded and known to be established in New Zealand up to 1988. References to generic names alone were omitted from this catalogue. This list records all genera with material deposited in the New Zealand Arthropod Collection (NZAC) which may be collected in New Zealand and its offshore islands (441 genera). Specimens of exotic taxa held by the NZAC are not included. Taxa introduced for biological control are not included unless they are known to have established. No attempt is made to present complete synonymies, but in some cases well known junior synonyms are added in parentheses.

According to S.I. Malyshev, a Soviet entomologist, the first hymenopterans appeared early in the Mesozoic Era (about 225,000,000 years ago)--about the same time as the first butterflies, moths, and flies. It is his thesis that the Hymenoptera derived from the so-called Eumecoptera--ancestors of the modern scorpion fly (order Mecoptera), the first insects to undergo complete metamorphosis. Another expert fixes the appearance of the first Hymenoptera in the middle of the Jurassic Period (150,000,000 years ago).
