Phylum Ctenophora
- English

The Cnidaria and Ctenophora are the only ‘radially symmetrical’ metazoan phyla in the animal kingdom. The name of this
strange collection of animals literally means ‘comb-bearing’.The comb-jellies are incredibly fragile and it is hard to avoid
damaging them during collection, consequently relatively little is known about the group as a whole. All described species are
marine in habit. [ eng ] |

Natural history. Natural history. The more primitive forms (order Cydippida) have a pair of
long, retractable branched tentacles that function in the capture of food. The tentacles are richly supplied with
adhesive cells called colloblasts, which are found only among ctenophores. These cells produce a sticky secretion, to
which prey organisms adhere on contact. [ eng ] |
