Образ жизни очень слабо изучен. Как и у всех гладких китов, шейные позвонки слиты. Примечательны ребра (17 пар): они очень широкие и уплощенные (особенно задние).

Питание - питаются мелкими планктонными ракообразными (длиной 3-4 мм), главным образом рачками каланусоми (Calanus finmarchicus), а также небольшими (длиной 4-5 мм) крылоногими моллюсками Limacina helicina. Остальной зоопланктон имеет в питании второстепенное значение.

Питание - в Антарктике питаются только рачком-черноглазкой, в районах зимовок голодают, а в других районах поедают разнообразную пищу - придонных и пелагических массовых рачков, стайных рыб (тех же самых, что и малый полосатик), редко головоногих моллюсков. При ловле пищи вблизи дна киты круто уходят вниз, покаывая над водой лопасти хвоста.
