Afro-Asiatic Languages, formerly known as Hamito-Semitic languages, principal language family of northern Africa and the Middle East, comprising about 250 languages. The Afro-Asiatic family has five branches, or subfamilies: Semitic, Berber, Egyptian, Cushitic, and Chadic.
