Становление албанской литературы началось в 19 в., но сохранилось немало текстов более раннего времени. Римско-католическая крещальная формула на албанском языке была опубликована в 1462, а сохранившийся отрывок перевода Нового Завета некоторые ученые датируют 14 в. Старейшей албанской книгой считается католический требник, опубликованный в 1555 священником по имени Бузуку.
