Web Dictionary of Cybernetics and Systems: Teleology
- English
URL: http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/ASC/Teleology.html
shown in filters: References and Indices The philosophical study of manifestations of design or purposes in natural processes or occurrences, under the belief that natural processes are not determined by mechanism but rather by
their utility in an overall natural design. Dysteleology is the doctrine of purposelessness in nature. (American Heritage Dictionary) Teleology is associated with vitalism. It explains apparently
purposeful animal behavior by saying that the action is performed because it will later be advantageous to the animal. Science, on the other hand, has sought to explain apparently purposeful
behavior through the theory of mechanism. [ eng ] |

Encyclopedia.com - Results for teleology
- English
URL: http://www.encyclopedia.com/articles/12700.html
shown in filters: References and Indices Term applied to any system attempting to
explain a series of events in terms of ends, goals, or
purposes. It is opposed to mechanism, which holds that
all events are explained by the mechanical principles of
causation. Teleologists have frequently identified
purpose in the universe as God's will. The teleological
proof of the existence of God argues that since there is
design in the world, there must be a designer (God). A
more recent, evolutionary view finds purpose in the
higher levels of organic life but holds that it is not
necessarily based on any transcendent being. [ eng ] |
