Born in Holland, Hugo Grotius (Hugo de Groot) wrote Latin elegies at age eight, went to university at age eleven, and began to practice law at age sixteen. He gradually became involved in politics until his opposition to Maurice of Nassau led to imprisonment (1618-1621), and he spent the rest of his life in exile, mostly in Paris, living from his writing (prose and poetry) and his work as a diplomat. His numerous books on history, law, and religion synthesized the material from an exceptional range of other writers and were presented with a compelling fluency that assured them wide circulation.

Huig de Groot (Hugo Grotius) - English
URL: http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/phl302/philosophers/grotius.html

One of the pioneering natural rights theorists of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, Grotius defined natural law as a perceptive judgement in which things are good or bad by their own nature. This was a break from Calvinist ideals, in that God was no longer the only source of ethical qualities. These things that are by themselves good are associated with the nature of man. The Dutch Republic had been founded on princples of religious toleration but had become a Calvinist theocracy. Grotius, a humanist and Dutch patriot, struggled with Calvinism all of his life.In this struggle, he dealt with the international laws of war and issues of peace and justice.

Huig de Groot, known by the Latin form Hugo Grotius, was born in Delft, Holland on April 10, 1583. His father was a burgomaster and Curator of the University of Leyden. By the age of eight Hugo was writing Latin poetry, and at twelve he entered the University and studied under the great scholar Joseph Scaliger. At fifteen he left the University, and serving the statesman Barneveld he traveled on a diplomatic mission to France where Henry IV called him "The Miracle of Holland." In 1600 he was admitted to the bar and settled at The Hague to practice law with Barneveld and the Dutch East India merchants. He married in 1609, and became official historian of the United Provinces and advocate-general of Holland and Zeeland.

Hugo Grotius (Huigh De Groot) was a Dutch legal scholar, playwright and poet. As a natural law philosopher, he is generally credited as the originator of "natural morality" and the "social contract" theory of the State. His 1609 book promoted idea that seas should be free for the innocent use and mutual benefit of all -- an idea disputed subsequently disputed by some Mercantilists. Grotius's 1625 treatise is acknowledged as the first in international law. More famously, Grotius argued that "property" was only the outcome of social consent, and thus had nothing "inalienable" in it. This conclusion was disputed by Pufendorf.
