T.S. Eliot "Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"notes - English URL: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/english/English151W-03/prufrock.htm
The speaker of this ironic monologue is a modern, urban man who, like many of his kind, feels isolated and incapable of decisive action. Irony is apparent from the title, for this is not a conventional love song. Prufrock would like to speak of love to a woman, but he does not dare.
T.S. Eliot "Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"notes - English URL: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/english/English151W-03/wasteland.htm
Eliot believed that modern society lacked a vital sense of community and a spiritual center. The waste land of the poem is modern European culture, which had come too far from its spiritual roots.

An Anglo-American poet, critic, dramatist, and editor, Thomas Stearns Eliot was a major innovator in modern English poetry, famous above all for his revolutionary poem The Waste Land (1922). His seminal critical essays, such as those published in The Sacred Wood (1920), helped to usher in literary modernism by stressing tradition, continuity, and objective discipline over indulgent romanticism and subjective egoism.
