Smollett, Tobias George (1721-71). Novelist. - English URL: http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~crumey/tobias_smollett.html
According to tradition, Smollett was born beneath a plane tree at Dalquharn House on the family estate of Bonhill in the Vale of Leven, near the village of Renton (Dumbartonshire). The house and tree are no longer there, but Cameron house, the family home from 1763, still stands and now contains a small museum. The nearby village of Alexandria is named after a family member.

Smolett, Tobias George - English URL: http://www.fwkc.com/encyclopedia/low/articles/s/s023002003f.html
Scottish novelist, born in Dalquhurn, Dumbarton Co., and educated at the University of Glasgow. He became a surgeon's mate on a British naval vessel and in 1744 began practice as a surgeon in London. His career as a writer began with a historical play and some political satires, but it was his first picaresque novel, The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748), that made him famous; it is a vigorous, brutal comedy about a British sailor. It was followed by several other novels in which colorful adventures are mixed with grotesque characterizations and broad satire.
