Archibald Joseph Cronin, the creator of Doctor Finlay, was born in Cardross, near Dumbarton, on 19 February 1896. He studied medicine at Glasgow University and was a Navy surgeon during the war, then worked as a general practitioner, first in South Wales, and afterwards in London's Harley Street. Ill health in 1930 led him to write his first novel, "Hatter's Castle", which was well-received critically and an instant bestseller, establishing Cronin as one of the most bankable authors of his day. "The Citadel" broke all publishing records, with Gollancz, Cronin's delighted publishers, shifting 10,000 hardback copies a week for months. Cronin typically drew on his medical background in his books, and in the sixties his Scottish novels provided the basis for "Doctor Finlay's Casebook", a hugely succesful television series set in the fictional town of Tannochbrae, whose jaunty signature tune is instantly recognisable to people of a certain age.
