Посвятивший многие годы дипломатической службе, Ламартин оставил ее после революции 1830. Его заочно избрали в палату депутатов. Своей Историей жирондистов (Histoire des girondins, 1847) Ламартин способствовал формированию общественных настроений, которые привели к Февральской революции 1848. Он ненадолго становится министром иностранных дел и главой Временного правительства. Переворот Луи Бонапарта положил конец политической карьере Ламартина.

Альфонс Ламартин родился в 1790 году в семье обедневших дворян в родовом замке Мильи. Мать его была очень благочестивой женщиной, но с большим высокомерием относящейся к жизни. Она вела пространный дневник (у сына сохранились 20 томов ее записей), в котором описывала таинство общения с Богом. Такое же благочестие она пыталась внушить и своим детям. Ламартин утверждал, что до 12 лет ел только растительную пищу, а позже, хотя и уступил обычным человеческим привычкам, все равно считал, что употреблять мясо животных безнравственно.

Educado en el seno de una familia militar, encamina sus pasos al mundo de la polнtica. Ocupa su primer cargo oficial bajo el gobierno de Luis XVIII en la secretaria de la embajada francesa de Nбpoles. Con Carlos X en el poder le trasladan a Florencia, donde sigue formando parte del cuerpo diplomбtico. De vuelta a Francia ocupa un escaсo en la Cбmara de los Diputados. En 1848, tras la caнda de Luis Felipe, el gobierno en funciones le asigna la cartera de Asuntos Exteriores. Al margen de sus dotes administrativas, Lamartine sobresaliу en el panorama literario por la delicadeza de sus versos y sus excepcionales representaciones de la naturaleza.

Prior to 1848 Lamartine had enjoyed a distinguished career and fame as a statesman-politician, poet and historian. A po lished orator, he was able to sway and influence the public and the government. He had made many speeches in behalf of the workers and the poor in an effort to make life more bearable for them. The organization of labor and the right to work, demanded by the masses in February, had already been advocated by him.

Alphonse de Lamartine verlebt seine Jugendjahre in Macon, dann teils auf dem Landgut seiner Eltern in Milly bei Macon, teils in Internatsschulen (wo er als 12-Jдhriger einmal ausreiЯt). 1811/12 macht er eine Bildungsreise in das zu dieser Zeit von Frankreich beherrschte Italien (Rom und Neapel). 1812 wird er Bьrgermeister von Milly und reist erstmals nach Paris.
