Складывавшийся в эпоху Великой Французской Революции, романтизм сам выковывал свои новые формы в пылкой борьбе с классицизмом - этим, по выражению Гюго, "старым порядком", деспотическая власть которого тяжко угнетала литературу. Сам поэт так определяет свою роль и значение в создании нового направления во французской поэзии. "Я, - говорит Гюго, - провозгласил слова свободными, равными, совершеннолетними".

французский поэт, романист, драматург; лидер романтического движения во Франции. Родившийся 26 февраля 1802 в Безансоне Виктор Мари был третьим сыном капитана (позднее генерала) Ж.Л.С.Гюго (родом из Лотарингии) и Софи Требюше (родом из Бретани). Родители совершенно не подходили друг другу и часто разъезжались; 3 февраля 1818 они получили официальное разрешение жить раздельно. Мальчик воспитывался под сильным влиянием матери, волевой женщины, разделявшей роялистские и вольтерьянские взгляды. После смерти жены в 1821 отец сумел вернуть любовь сына.

26 февраля 1881 года, семьдесят девятый день рождения Виктора Гюго, Париж и вся Франция отметили как национальный праздник. На авеню Эйлау воздвигли триумфальную арку. Сквозь нее, мимо дома Гюго, прошествовало шестьсот тысяч парижан и провинциалов. Великий человек, стоя с внуками у окна, кланялся и благодарил своих почитателей. Через полгода авеню Эйлау переименовали в авеню Виктор-Гюго. На своей собственной улице Гюго прожил еще четыре года. 1 июня 1885 года несметная толпа проводила его гроб от площади Звезды до Пантеона.

Il s'йleva tout seul, lut beaucoup, au hasard, s'йprit, dиs quinze ans, а la fois de vers et de mathйmatiques, se prйparant а l'Йcole polytechnique et concourant aux Jeux floraux.

Novelist, poet, and dramatist, the most important of French Romantic writers. In his preface to his historical play CROMWELL (1827) Hugo wrote that romanticism is the liberalism of literature. Hugo developed his own version of the historical novel, combining concrete, historical details with vivid, melodramatic, even feverish imagination. Among his best-known works are The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Misйrables.
