Ìåæäó òåì äåíåæíûå äåëà óõóäøèëèñü íàñòîëüêî, ÷òî îí íàêîíåö ðåøèëñÿ îáðàòèòüñÿ çà ïîìîùüþ ê Ëþñèåíó Áîíàïàðòå, ïîñëàâ ê íåìó è ïåðâûå ñâîè îïûòû. Ëþñèåí, ïîä÷àñ ñàì ïèñàâøèé ñòèõè è ðîìàíû, îöåíèë ìîëîäîé òàëàíò è âåëèêîäóøíî óñòóïèë Á. ñâîå æàëîâàíüå â 1000 ôðàíê., êîòîðîå ïîëó÷àë â êà÷åñòâå ÷ëåíà èíñòèòóòà.

Pierre Jean de Béranger, chantre des humbles et ennemi déclaré du cléricalisme, naît à Paris en 1780. À cause de la séparation de ses parents il est élevé chez son grand-père. À quatorze ans il entre dans l'atelier d'un imprimeur. En 1796 il commence à écrire: une comédie satirique, un poème épique et des odes. Il se met à esquisser ses premières chansons, en 1802, et acquiert la célébrité avec Le Roi d'Yvetot, en 1813.

He fitted his verse to popular melodies, and he used his poems largely to express republican and Bonapartist ideas, for which he was twice imprisoned.

En 1790, les premiers troubles révolutionnaires décidèrent la famille Béranger à s'éloigner de la capitale et trouvèrent refuge à Péronne (Somme), chez les grand-parents du jeune Béranger. En 1792, pendant un orage, la foudre s'abattra à proximité du jeune garçon. Sa vie fut menacée durant plusieurs jours et il faillit perdre la vue. Monsieur Laisney, imprimeur dans cette ville, le prendra comme apprenti typographe et l'initiera à la poésie.

French poet. He gained a great reputation in the post-Napoleonic period for his popular songs, many of which display his sympathy for the oppressed and his hostility to the restored Bourbon monarchy. He published a series of Chansons from 1816 onwards, and from the 1830s to the end of the century his poetry was widely translated both in Britain and the US.
