Fabre, Jean Henri (1823-1915), entomologiste franзais, cйlиbre pour ses йtudes sur le comportement des arthropodes. Nй а Saint-Lйons dans l'Aveyron, il intйgra l'Йcole normale et s'intйressa aux insectes. Aprиs avoir йtй instituteur, puis professeur de chimie en Provence et en Corse, il prit sa retraite en 1871 et vйcut en reclus а Sйrignan (Vaucluse) oщ il se voua а l'йtude de l'entomologie. Fabre fonda ses recherches sur l'observation des insectes dans leur environnement.

French entomologist and author. He is known for his observations on insects and his study of their behavior. Fabre demonstrated the importance of instinct among insects. He taught until 1870 at Carpentras, Ajaccio, and Avignon, wrote works on popular science at Orange (1870-79), then retired to nearby Sйrignan, where he devoted himself to entomological studies.

Largely self-taught, Fabre was appointed a teacher at the lycйe of Carpentras, Fr. (1842), was made physics teacher at the lycйe of Ajaccio, Corsica (1843–51), and was given a teaching position at the lycйe of Avignon (1853).

По окончании педагогического училища (1842) работал школьным учителем. С 1849 преподавал в лицее Аяччо (о.Корсика). В 1852 стал преподавателем физики и химии в Авиньонском лицее. В 1871 был отстранен от преподавания и поселился в маленьком домике на окраине Оранжа. Когда Фабру было уже 55 лет, он наконец приобрел участок земли в небольшой деревне Сериньян-дю-Конта в Провансе, примерно в 80 км от побережья. Фабр превратил эту землю в настоящую полевую лабораторию для изучения жизни насекомых.
