(1636–1711), ôðàíöóçñêèé ïîýò è êðèòèê. Ðîäèëñÿ 1 íîÿáðÿ 1636 â Ïàðèæå. Áûë ïÿòíàäöàòûì ðåáåíêîì â ñåìüå ñîñòîÿòåëüíîãî ñóäåéñêîãî êëåðêà, ëèøèëñÿ ìàòåðè â äâóõëåòíåì âîçðàñòå. Ñ 1643 ïî 1652 ó÷èëñÿ â êîëëåæàõ Àðêóð è Áîâå, ãäå ïîëó÷èë îñíîâàòåëüíîå êëàññè÷åñêîå îáðàçîâàíèå. Ïî íàñòîÿíèþ ñåìüè â 1646 ïðèíÿë ñàí, îäíàêî êàðüåðà ñâÿùåííîñëóæèòåëÿ åãî íå ïðèâëåêàëà è îí ïðèñòóïèë ê èçó÷åíèþ ïðàâà (1652–1656).

Les premiers écrits de Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux expriment un mépris pour la littérature galante et montrent son admiration pour Molière et Racine ( Satires, 1666-1668). Il écrit ensuite des poèmes moraux ( Épîtres, 1669-1695). Avec l'Art poétique (1674), il expose les préceptes généraux de la doctrine classique et les règles des genres principaux, cette oeuvre deviendra le modèle et le résumé de la doctrine classique.

French poet, b. at Paris, 1 November, 1636; d. there, 13 March, 1711. He was educated at the college of Beauvais and was at first destined to enter the Church, but soon abandoned the study of theology and, to please his father, prepared himself for the Bar. Though admitted as counsellor-at-law (December , 1656), he never practised and his father having died leaving him enough to satisfy his wants, he devoted himself entirely to poetry.

(1636-1711), poet, satirist, and literary critic, is cited most often as the arbiter of the aesthetics of French classicism. His positions on poetry, the genres, and particular authors are scattered throughout his Satires and Epîtres; they are found as well in his Réflexions sur Longin and his preface to the 1701 edition of his works, but L'Art poétique offers the most complete and the most enduring statement of his poetics.

Le soi-disant «législateur de Parnasse», Boileau était l’ami de Molière et de Racine: il devint avec ce dernier historiographe du roi en 1677. Un satiriste avant tout qui n’aimait guère Colbert, il est aujourd’hui connu pour les idées littéraires esquises dans son Art poétique. Cet ouvrage de 1674 définirait ce que l’on appele maintenant le classicisme français.
