Educated at the École Normale Supérieure, Paris, the University of Munich and at Harvard. In 1929 he became Director of Information of France. He held the same post in the governments of Henri and Pétain. After the First World War he became known for his novels and in later years his plays attracted attention. Many of these were modern treatments of ancient Greek pieces. His last play was "La folle de Chaillot", which he completed in 1943.

Jean Giraudoux wächst auf als Sohn eines kleinen Beamten in südwestfranzösischen Kleinstädten. Dank eines Begabten-Stipendiums kann er das Gymnasium in Châteauroux besuchen, dann die classes préparatoires des Lycée Lakanal (wo der bekannte Germanist Charles Andler sein Interesse für Deutschland weckt) und schließlich die École Normale Supérieure, die er 1905 als bester seines Jahrgangs mit dem diplôme d'allemand abschließt.
