Julie Thompson Klein : Notes Toward a Social Epistemology of Transdisciplinari - English
URL: http://perso.club-internet.fr/nicol/ciret/bulletin/b12/b12c2.htm

JULIE THOMPSON KLEIN Notes Toward a Social Epistemology of The need for transdisciplinarity arises from developments in knowledge and culture that are characterized by complexity, hybridity, non-linearity, and heterogeneity. The need for transdisciplinarity arises from developments in knowledge and culture that are characterized by complexity, hybridity, non-linearity, and heterogeneity. Advancing the proposed project will require developing a common conceptual framework, vocabulary, and pedagogies. Designing new institutions is important, but it must occur alongside coalition building and supporting integrative strategies in existing institutions.

Adolf Heschl - Evolutionary Epistemology Taken Seriously - - English
URL: http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/einmag_abstr/aheschl.html

Evolutionary epistemology as the ambitious attempt to provide a biological explanation for complex cognitive capacities in human beings is yet far from being accepted by the scientific community as a new and serious discipline. Usually, natural scientists believe that this field of metaphysical speculation has nothing to do with real science. Nevertheless, it can be shown that a consistent integration of epistemology into modern evolutionary theory is possible if one simply eliminates both the existing pure analogies as well as the more hidden Lamarckian elements. The result, however, a scientific epistemology in the original sense of Darwin and Boltzmann, may force us to modify major parts of our self-understanding.

Evolutionary Epistemology - English
URL: http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/evolepist.html

Evolutionary epistemology is an approach that sees knowledge in the first place as a product of the variation and selection processes characterizing evolution. It notes, first, that the original function of knowledge is to make survival and reproduction of the organism that uses it more likely. Thus, organisms with better knowledge of their environments would have been preferred to organisms with less adequate knowledge. In that way, the phylogenetical evolution of knowledge depends on the degree to which its carrier survives natural selection through its environment.

Descartes' Epistemology - English
URL: http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/descartes-epistemology/

Renй Descartes' approach to the theory of knowledge plays a prominent role in shaping the agenda of early modern philosophy. It continues to effect (some would say "infect") the way problems in epistemology are conceived today. Students of philosophy (in his own day, and in the history since) have found the distinctive features of his epistemology to be at once attractive and troubling; features such as the emphasis on method, the role of epistemic foundations, the conception of the doubtful as contrasting with the warranted, the sceptical arguments of the First Meditation, and the cogito ergo sum--to mention just a few that we shall consider.

Evolution, Learning and Popper's Epistemology - English
URL: http://www.geocities.com/athens/5235/cristianini.html

Artificial Life algorithms are extensively used for Knowledge Acquisition tasks in Artificial Intelligence, but no theoretical justification for this fact has yet been provided. Evolutionary Epistemology represents the ultimate development of Karl Popper's analysis of knowledge acquisition processes, and stretches to its extreme consequences his view of theory formation as a process of trial-and-error. In the most general case, Popper proved, every knowledge acquisition activity must be regarded as a sequence of casual conjectures and successive refutations, in tight analogy with evolutionary processes of mutation and natural selection.

Factastic Epistemology - English
URL: http://www.rbjones.com/rbjpub/philos/epistem/rbj005.htm

... 'is an intellectually liberating outgrowth of Humean skepticism. It is an epistemology for dreamers, a reaction against the stultification of creativity engendered by institutions of all kinds. Factastic Epistemology is the epistemology for people who want to create the future rather than be subjected to it.'

Epistemology - English
URL: http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/epistem.html

In MST Theory, knowledge is understood as consisting of models that allow the adaptation of a cybernetic system to its environment, by anticipation of possible perturbations. Models function as recursive generators of predictions about the world and the self. A model is necessarily simpler than the environment it represents, and this enables it to run faster than, i.e. anticipate, the processes in the environment. This allows the system to compensate perturbations before they have had the opportunity to damage the system.
