Henry VII agreed with Cabot on the assumption that he would profit greatly from any precious goods brought back from the Orient. He provided the Italian with a small ship, called ‘The Mathew’, and an eighteen-man crew (An exact replica of the ship can be seen in Bristol today).

Giovanni Cabota of Gabota. Sebastian Son of John Cabot. Born probably in Venice c. 1474; died 1557, or soon after. As already stated, he may have taken part in the first expedition of his father. In 1512 he was in the employ of Henry VIII of England as cartographer; in the same year he accompanied Willoughby to Spain, where he recieved the rank of Captain from King Ferdinand V.

This experience, it is assumed, was the stimulus of his later explorations. Like Columbus (though there is no evidence that either influenced the other), he apparently believed that the riches of East Asia might be more easily reached by sailing west.
