Catherine II (l762-1796), a German princess who became Empress of Russia after disposing of her ineffectual husband was one of the most successful European monarchs. She followed Peter the Great in seeing Russia (which had been part of an Asian Empire for centuries) as European Power. Among her other achievements, added some 200 000 square miles to the territory of the Russian empire.

On 29th April 1917, Imperatritsa Ekaterina was renamed Svobodnaya Rossiya. She was sunk by 4 torpedoes from the destroyer Kerch to prevent her being handed over to German forces after the ceasefire. In the 1930s, parts of the ship including some of the boilers were salvaged.

Empress Ekaterina II was reigning for 34 year. In all she did she tried to imitate Peter I. She started to formulate the "New code of law". Amount of counties vastly increased, they divided into districts, many greater villages transformed to the towns. The "City code of Law" was herewith worked out that gave cities a home rule in the manner of Town dumas. Nobles received their "Letters Patent" that confirmed their priveleges, merchants and commoners were recognized as particular classes.
