He was born in 1090 near Dijon, of a noble family. In 1112 he joined (and induced others to join) the monastery at Citeaux the heart of the Cistercian reform. At that time Citeaux was poor and far from flourishing; it was Bernard's influence which was to save it and strengthen the whole Cistercian movement.

Bernard, son of Tescelin Sorrel, and Aleth, daughter of the lord of Montbard, was born in the family castle of Fontaines, near Dijon, in Burgundy. His pious French mother offered all her seven children—six sons and one daughter—to God at birth and devoted herself to their upbringing.

Though the Monastery of Citeaux (founded in 1098 by Stephan Harding) was renowned for the severity and strictness of its rules, Bernard, nevertheless, produced a strong impression in the circles into which lie had entered, by the austerity of his ascetic practices, and by the passionate energy with which he concentrated his whole life on the one thing needful. When, in 1115, the monastery proved too small for the number of persons asking for admission, — Bernard, for instance, came in company with thirty others whom he had converted from the world, —and it was found necessary to send out a colony and found a new monastery, Bernard was placed at the head of the emigrants.

Bernard, third son of a Burgundian nobleman, was born in 1090. His brothers were trained as soldiers, but Bernard from youth was destined for scholarship. One Christmas Eve as a child he had a dream about the infant Christ in the manger; and the memory of it, and consequent devotion to the mystery of the Word made flesh, remained with him throughout his life.

1090?–1153, French churchman, mystic, Doctor of the Church. Born of noble family, in 1112 he entered the Cistercian abbey of Cîteaux, taking along 4 or 5 brothers and some 25 friends. In 1115 he headed the group sent to found a house at Clairvaux. There he remained abbot all his life, despite many efforts to elevate him to higher ecclesiastical office.
