Formulated theory of the Ice Ages (i.e., that pre-historical glacial advances were due to world-wide climatic changes); idealist and leading exponent of creationism in the tradition of Cuvier (his mentor in Paris); founder of paleoichthyology; leading ichthyologist; founder of the Museum of Comparative Zoology and mentor of dozens of American naturalists.

A great systematist and paleontologist, a renowned teacher and tireless promoter of science in America, he was also a lifelong opponent of Darwin's theory of evolution. (28.5.1807 - 12.12.1873), швейцарский естествоиспытатель, ученик и последователь Ж. Кювье. В 1846 переселился в США, где преподавал в университетах, основал музей сравнительной анатомии при Гарвардском университете. Исследования А. в гляциологии положили начало учению о ледниковых эпохах. Автор капитального труда об ископаемых рыбах и ряда трудов по современным рыбам Европы и Бразилии, ископаемым и современным иглокожим и др.
