As the first to be called by Jesus Christ into his service, St. Andrew commands a reverence a degree greater than those who have followed. For this reason, St. Andrew is called Protokletos, or "First-called."

Although Andrew and his brother Peter were two of the original apostles, very little is known about Andrew. He was a fisherman from Galilee, who went on to spread the Christian religion in Greece and Asia Minor. He is believed to have been killed by being crucified by the Romans on a diagonal cross in Patras in Southern Greece.

The acts of this apostle's martyrdom, though rejected by Tillemont, &c., are maintained to be genuine by Nat. Alexander, Hist. t. i. and by Mr. Woog, professor of history and antiquities in Leipsic, in learned dissertations, published in 1748 and 1751. The authority of this piece being contested, little stress is laid upon it, and the following account is gathered from the sacred writings, and those of the fathers.

The Gospels tell us that Andrew was the brother of Simon Peter, and that they were fishermen from Bethsaida; they also had a house at Capharnaum, as we hear that our Lord stayed there when he was preaching in the neighborhood. Andrew had been a disciple of St John the baptist, and it was John who pointed out our Lord to him with the words, 'This is the Lamb of God.' Andrew and another of John's disciples immediately followed our Lord, and Andrew thus has the distinction of being known as the first of the disciples.

Andrew the Apostle 30 November NT. Most references to Andrew in the New Testament simply include him on a list of the Twelve Apostles, or group him with his brother, Simon Peter. But he appears acting as an individual three times in the Gospel of John.

The name "Andrew" (Gr., andreia, manhood, or valour), like other Greek names, appears to have been common among the Jews from the second or third century B.C. St. Andrew, the Apostle, son of Jonah, or John (Matt., xvi, 17; John, i, 42), was born in Bethsaida of Galilee (John, i, 44). He was brother of Simon Peter (Matt., x, 2; John, i, 40).

The Très Riches Heures ends with the Offices of Saint Andrew and of the Purification. As Saint Andrew was one of the Duke's heavenly patrons, a large miniature devoted to him had been planned during the prince's lifetime, only to be executed years later by Jean Colombe. Brother of Simon Peter, Andrew is said to have preached in Palestine and then in Scythia, Thrace, and Achaia.
