The second circumnavigation of the globe was accomplished by a pirate-turned-explorer named Francis Drake. Born in 1540, Drake was destined to become an adventurer, pirate, and expert seaman. During his lifetime, England and Spain were bitter rivals. Seeing Spain amassing a vast empire to the west, Queen Elizabeth I of England sent Drake on a mission to explore and to seek treasure and spices.

Фрэнсис Дрейк родился около 1540 года на ферме в Кроундейле, недалеко от Тейви-стока, в Девоншире. Ревностный протестант, отец Френсиса, Эдмунд Дрейк, был вынужден бежать с семьей из Кроундейла в Плимут, когда в 1549 году началось крестьянское восстание. Эдмунд Дрейк устроился корабельным священником. Francis Drake apparently was fond of music, for there are numerous references, in contemporary English and even Spanish accounts, to musicians and instruments being aboard his ships. Mentioned are string and wind instruments, including viols (ancestors of the violin), trumpets, sackbuts (early trombones), recorders and hautbois (the French term for shawms, predecessors of the oboe).
