In 1947 Thor Heyerdahl and five crew members sailed the Kon-Tiki, a balsa wood raft, from South America to Polynesia, to prove his theory that pre-Columbian intercultural global contact was possible. During 1969-70 he sailed two papyrus rafts, Ra I and Ra II, across the Atlantic, to show that ancient Egyptians could have had contact with South America.

The famous Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl led the first archaeological expedition to Easter Island in 1955- 56. In 1962 he gave a series of lectures to the Swedish Society of Anthropology and Geography in Stockholm. His lectures can be read in his book, Sea Routes to Polynesia.

The Kon-Tiki Museum is a private foundation, which houses a range of boats and artefacts from Thor Heyerdahl´s expeditions. Here you can see the original Kon-Tiki raft (1947) with a 30 foot whale shark underneath...statues and a secret family cave from Easter Island (1956)...the papyrus boat Ra II (1970)...and an exciting collection of archaeological finds from Easter Island, East Polynesia, Galapagos and Peru.
