d. 1500, Portuguese navigator. He was the first European to round (1488) the Cape of Good Hope, which he called Cabo Tormentoso [cape of storms]. That voyage opened the road to India. Dias accompanied Cabral on the voyage that resulted in the discovery of Brazil, but he perished in heavy seas off the African coast. He is also called Bartholomew Diaz.

Bartholomeu Diaz was born in 1450 in Portugal. He was a Portuguese navigator first round the Cape of Good Hope, Africa. In 1481 he commanded a vessel in a flotilla that King John of Portugal sent to the Gold Coast of Africa. Five years later, the King commanded Diaz to continue the exploration of the Western coast of Africa.

Со смертью Генриха Мореплавателя у португальских монархов на некоторое время исчез интерес к исследованиям. В течение ряда лет они занимались другими делами: в стране происходили междоусобные войны, шли бои с маврами. Только в 1481 году, после восшествия на престол короля Жуана 11, африканское побережье опять увидело вереницы португальских судов и новую плеяду смелых и независимых моряков.
