Died at Goa 16 December, 1515. He was second son of Gonzallo de Albuquerque, lord of Villaverde, and became attached to the person of the king of Portugal. He went to Otranto with Alphonso V in 1480, and made his first voyage to the far East in 1503, returning to Lisbon 1504. When Tristan de Cunha sailed for India in 1506, Albuquerque was one of his officers.

Portuguese admiral, the effective founder of the Portuguese Empire in the East. He first went to India in 1503, and in 1506 he set out for India again, to assume command from Francisco de Almeida in command. Albuquerque sailed with Tristão da Cunha along the coasts of Madagascar and E Africa and captured the island of Socotra (Suqutra).

Militar e político português. É, sem dúvida, a figura mais emblemática da expansão portuguesa no Oriente. Oriundo de uma família nobre, é criado na corte de D. Afonso V, serve em praças-fortes portuguesas de Marrocos e integra a guarda pessoal de D. João II. Entre 1503 e 1505 D. Manuel confia-lhe a sua primeira missão na Índia.
