Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink era un geógrafo noruego con una desbordante pasión por la aventura y el conocimiento. Tras emigrar a Australia y dedicar un corto periodo de tiempo a la enseñanza, no tardó en encontrar la forma de dar cuerpo a su deseo de conocer el Polo Sur, embarcándose en 1893 en Melbourne en el ballenero noruego Antártica, que estaba al mando del Capitán Leonard Kristensen.
