Born on September 22, 1741 as the son of a professor at the Collegium medico-chirurgicum and first surgeon at the Charité in Berin, he passed the anatomical examinations in Berlin at the age of 17 and later studied mathematics and physics in Halle and Göttingen.

The explorer Peter Simon Pallas (1748-1811) counted a total of 6,194 German colonist families with 25,781 people (13,441 male and 12,340 female) on his journey through the Volga colonies in 1773. The number of families was less than in 1769, but the population as a whole had grown considerably despite low life expectancy.

In 1769, Pallas was a member of an expedition to observe the transit of Venus, and until 1774 he explored the upper Amur, the Caspian Sea, and the Ural and Altai mts., collecting valuable specimens in natural history. Pallas published (1771–76) an account of the journey and also wrote on natural history and on Bering's discoveries.

Pallas, a German naturalist, was a member of the Royal Academy of Science at St. Petersburg. In 1768 he led an expedition to Siberia which lasted for six years, reaching as far eastward as Lake Baikal. The expedition studied the land, people, and vegetable and animal life of the region, producing some excellent maps of the areas explored.
