ARTHUR WING PINERO was born at London in 1855. Trained at first for the law, he remained in his father's law office until he was nineteen, when he became an actor with Mr. and Mrs. Wyndham, playing minor rôles for a year in Edinburgh.

Arthur Wing Pinero was in race, part Jew and part Gentile; in blood, part Latin and part Anglo-Saxon; in name, Portuguese. His father was a solicitor and he himself was educated for the law. He preferred, however, at 19, to get himself a job as an actor and made connection with the theater in Edinburgh at the munificent salary of one pound a week.

Luigi Pirandello was born in 1867 in Girgenti (now Agrigento) on the island of Sicily. Luigi's father was a fairly prosperous sulphur dealer and intended that his son should follow in his footsteps, but the boy demonstrated a studious bent early on, and as a result, he was provided with a literary schooling.

AUSTRIAN dramatist and novelist Ludwig Anzengruber was born at Vienna on the 29th of November 1839. He was educated at the Realschule of his native town, and then entered a bookseller's shop; from 1860 to 1867 he was an actor, without, however, displaying any marked talent, although his stage experience later stood him in great stead.
